Who?
Martha J. Baldwin (she/her) is a London-based theatre director, originally from West Yorkshire. Martha grew up immersed in folklore and pagan culture, with many childhood holidays spent exploring the Dales and stone circles across the British Isles looking for fairies.
She undertook the MA Directing course at Drama Centre London (UAL), and during this time received a high quality education in movement and character theory, which is now a core element of her practice.
After graduating, Martha began working in the education sector, before discovering the incredible work being made in the Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) sector. She has fused together her work in education and theatre to make new work for children. She enjoys bringing to life the magic she felt as a child, and believes that the TYA sector has an important part to play in the growth and confidence of the next generation.
Martha is enjoying life as a multi-sector artist, with one foot in making surreal queer theatre, and the other in making socially conscious magical work for children. She believes these two practices inform and challenge one another, and motivate her to strive for excellence in each area.
She has also worked as a freelance stage manager across the London fringe sector.
She has received the following training:
MA Directing @ Drama Centre London (Distinction)
Puppetry Foundation Course @ Little Angel Theatre
Creating Theatre for Early Years @ Polka Theatre
Martha is neurodivergent and queer. She is openly supportive of the transgender community, and strives to challenge non-disabled and patriarchal norms.
